Office Resource Guide

If you're starting up a new business or looking to upgrade your out-dated equipment, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the diverse array of brands, models and technology products in retail stores. You'll want to know just what you need and whittle down your options from there until you find the right machine for your business.

Do your research before you buy. Most big retail stores have their own sites that offer product reviews. However, a useful site for research and information is Home Office Reports. This site is an extensive information resource on all office products from accounting software  to word processors and just about everything you can think of in between, including color laser printers firewire/USB hubs portable printers off-site backup, print and pre-press software, voice and data services and they even review office supply companies. Each of the categories include a guide with valuable information, a breakdown of the important parts and a chart that rates products by simplicity, cost effectiveness, productivity gain, usability, compatibility, durability, features and functions and an overall rating. Office products are also ranked by amateur, rookie and professional levels which will help guide you to the right tools for the job. Some categories, for example digital video cameras will provide general ratings on brands only in the chart, as well as detailed information on the overall effectiveness of that brands' cameras. A very thorough, comprehensive site.

Consumer Guide also has product reviews, though their categories are somewhat limited in comparison to Home Office Reports. They have a general buying guide for office products with good information and a valuable glossary of terms. They also feature good, easy-to-read sidebars with product specifications along with short reviews and top-rated products. There's a search option to sort by price, which Home Office Reports doesn't have.

Review Centre is a British site with somewhat simplified reviews, ratings and top picks. A little limited in information at this point, as they rely on users to submit comments, as does Epinions.com, which has more information on products within a relatively small range. There's some decent reviews of label makers multimedia projectors paper shredders as well as a message board-type discussion on whether or not word processors  should be extinct. Good information on the products that have reviews, however, the site isn't that extensive yet. Office Depot also has some select guides that are basically FAQs. Again, somewhat limited, but worth checking out.
